Sorry for the extreme hiatus. I literally wake up, go to work and then waddle home with this stupid injured foot, thus no content for the blog. Meanwhile all I can do is hate this stupid injury while I wish I could dance again.
Especially after watching this video of last year’s R16 competition in Korea. Its a few months old but I guess theres more reason to post it than just the dancing. Its shot well, the music choice is excellent, and the editing is key. I’m inspired on all levels…
So after years of dancing, I finally paid the price. Never had an injury until this past weekend. My crew ended up winning the whole competition, but I had to sit out after the first round due to torn ligaments in my foot. Congratulations Deuces Wild crew, we did it… or I guess I should say you guys did it and I was there…
This splint and these crutches are not a good look.
Riding off the momentum from their show at House of Blues Anaheim, Dj Flict, LD will be hosting weekly live DJ shows Wednesday night from 9pm-12pm (PST). Tune into their stream and check out live scratching and mixing. Also be on the lookout for some Cakedout!
Mondays are always a little hectic around the office. From the creative team grinding away at the designs to the marketing team getting to the piled up e-mails from the past weekend, everyone can always afford to take a five-minute breather to catch their breath. We thought it would be fitting to hop on Youtube and pull a few chill songs from the 90’s considering that it’s been a huge inspiration for our collections. Shut your eyes, grab your drink of choice (we suggest a 40 for the mood if you’re of age,) and just kick it to these beats.
Last week I stopped by HVW8 Art & Design Gallery photo exhibition entitled Mos Def: Ecstatic Moments. It showcased images taken by photographer and filmmaker Cognito capturing the past two years Mos Def was creating his LP “The Ecstatic”. The show goes on until the February 14th so for those that can’t make it to LA check out this video.
Having staff members who are or were involved in the dance scene definitely help shape the types of people we deal with. We’ve supported the popping community through westcoastpoppin.com since it’s creation—keeping in close contact with prominent figures in the dance world as well as its rising stars.
Our homie Slim is definitely one of those rising stars. The first time I saw him was at the Focus competition about two years ago. I remember how hyped he got the crowd. “Oohs” and “aahs” were thrown at him every single time he killed the beat. But behind the crowd’s applause are countless hours of practice. Popping as a dance style requires immense body control and technique. To the untrained eye, it may just seem like a simple movement, but once you learn the fundamental theories, you realize how impressive these dancers really are. Slim’s animation techniques are definitely world class. He’s battling in competitions all around the world and showing everyone what popping in the West Coast is all about.
Another reason why we enjoy working with him so much is how he never hesitates to reach out to the community he thrives in. We’ve posted in the past about his work with local schools, and he frequently throws jams around the West Coast. After talking to him a few times, we can definitely tell that he’s doing these things to support the dance.
Check his clips out and we dare you to not be impressed.
Down here in South Carolina… random day. Sorry for the anticlimactic video. Just wanted to share what it was like in case theres anyone out there who hasn’t shot a gun like me(until yesterday).
This past weekend I stopped by The Oinkster in Eagle Rock. I heard about this place through one of my favorite shows on food network “Diners, Drive ins, and Dives”. They are known for their pastrami sandwich you can see more from the video below. This place is pretty good if you don’t mind waiting in line, I suggest going for the chicken salad sandwich and pastrami. The pulled pork was ok nothing to rave about.
The wait looks worse than it really is.
Perfectly fried and worth a try.
